This week's prompt is welcome.

Your response should be exactly 100 words long. You do not have to include the prompt in your response -- it is meant as inspiration only.

Please use the tag "prompt: #474 - welcome" with your response.

Please put your drabble under a cut tag if it contains potential triggers, mature or explicit content, or spoilers for media released in the last month.

36 Hours to Reveals

We're so close! This year, Yuletide reveals are at 9pm UTC on 24 December - that has changed since last year.

COUNTDOWN TO REVEALS

Tips

Formatting

Getting your story up on AO3 is the main thing. But, now it's there, please check it over again before reveals - especially to see if you've left in any bits you're going to replace like [xxx]. But also please check for legibility - check for text with no gaps between paragraphs, or text with massive gaps between paragraphs. Click/tap for more information...
Issues often arise when posting from Google Docs. You can use this Google doc or this extension to help convert your document to HTML for a better copy/paste experience. The problem with italics and punctuation can also be solved by including the punctuation inside the italics tags.

If your story has no space between paragraphs, check to see if you pasted your story into the HTML tab instead of the Rich Text tab. Paragraph spacing occasionally gets added to places like summaries when you edit them, so you might want to double-check that also!

Below the cut are examples of spacing that’s too big, too little, and juuuuust right. )

If the spacing in your work is wacky, we recommend editing it to avoid putting off potential readers.

Your comment settings

In recent years, AO3 changed the default settings for comments on your work. If you want to allow comments from guests/readers who aren't logged in, check your work. Click/tap for info...
Before July 2024, the default setting for comments allowed on your work was "Registered users and guests can comment." In July, AO3 changed that so that the default setting is "Only registered users can comment." That means that if you posted your Yuletide work without changing the settings, no one can comment on your work without logging into their account.

If that matches your preferences, that's great. If you'd like to make it possible for anyone who reads your work to comment, please edit your work and change the setting. This setting is directly above the Work Text field.

Tagging and "Unspecified Fandom"

Please tag your work accurately, including warnings. We encourage you to use "Unspecified Fandom", alongside a specific tag, to help users find a fandom that isn't wrangled yet. Please reach out if you're not sure how to tag a new or non-canonical fandom. Click/tap for info...
For warnings, Choose Not to Warn is a valid warning tag. You may wish to use the end notes if there is content that you don't want to spoil with specific tags.

If your fandom is completely new, please use the tag that was approved into the tag set. These tags were formulated to meet archive guidelines and will be more quickly canonized, so that your work can be found from the Fandoms page of the collection. We recommend you also use "Unspecified Fandom", because this will show up in the fandoms list immediately, even if the actual fandom tag isn't wrangled straight away. Please do not tag your work with Unspecified Fandom as the only fandom tag. Instead, tag with both Unspecified Fandom and the actual fandom tag.

If your fandom is a subset of a canonical tag (like an RPF fandom that belongs in Actor RPF, or a season of a Let's Play fandom that has an overarching canonical), we recommend tagging with the parent fandom. Please reach out to mods if you're not sure that's what you should do.

Your author's notes

Please keep these positive. Please don't identify yourself - no social media links! Also, please don't apologize for your work, tell your recipient all about what a tough time you had writing, or otherwise ask your recipient to accept a negative sentiment along with their gift.

Treats!!

Additional works are warmly welcomed for participants signed up to Yuletide* and all additional pinch hitters.

Please check these guidelines for whether to post treats in the main Yuletide collection (closes Dec 24) or the Yuletide Madness collection (closes Dec 25). Unlike in some exchanges, Yuletide's treating period does not continue indefinitely. Please get your treats in before reveals - or you'll need to wait until next year.

Not all users accept treatsPlease do not create treats for: Arsenic, BluebirdCT, Budouka, couch1141, theblakery, Witgifu. This list is subject to change, as you can change the setting to accept treats (or not) at any time. Check with mods if unsure.

12 Days (til) Christmas Day 10

A tricky one. This was written for Yuletide, but is not, technically, a Christmas fic. But a large and important section of it does happen over the Christmas holidays, so I have decided it’s close enough, especially since it means I made it to 12 without having to dig out old Gundam fic from the back of a closet. Also, I’m pretty proud of it. This is the only time I have written Dead Poets Society, and probably the only time I will, because I threw absolutely everything I had to say about it into this one story. (It was also the most popular thing I had on AO3 by a long shot, until I started writing in MDZS/Untamed fandom which is a lot more active.) There were actually two things I wanted to write – one about Todd and Neil, and one about Todd in the aftermath of what happens – and then some part of my brain was like JUST DO BOTH AT ONCE and the structure ended up working out pretty well.

(CW for suicidal thoughts in this one, outside the canonical)

Apo Koinou (Dead Poets Society, Neil/Todd)
Rated T

‘They've all retired for the night, or at least scattered. Jeffrey's gone to phone his girlfriend in Boston, his parents have gone to their room to read. Todd sits alone on the living room floor in his pyjamas and bathrobe, knees pulled up to his chest, watching the twinkling coloured lights on the Christmas tree. He lets his eyes unfocus slowly, and the lights become blurry, dancing flickers of colour, shifting at the edges of his vision.’

Song: River, Joni Mitchell

Fic rec: Renovation by EdosianOrchids901 (Good Omens, G)

This is a tiny wee drabble, but so sweet: Aziraphale presents Crowley with a Christmas tree. Crowley pretends (tries?) to hate it.

A nice celestial sticker. Kind of leading in to the solstice, though this week ended the day before. This design is by Carly K./Mythic Management from her "Transcend" designs. My yellowish pen is definitely too orange for this color scheme, haha.

This was a very weird week. I started the week visiting Taylor and my mom, which was nice. Then we had the major wind storms, and the intentional power outages. In a way it was nice to have a couple unexpected half-days at work, but it very much threw everything for the week off. (I also did not succeed in using that extra time off to my advantage in getting other things done, heh.) I did get a few necessary things done: I wrapped gifts, mailed cards, and eventually caught most of the way up here. This time of year always somehow feels like I have way too much to do, though.

Goals for the week:

  • I did finish reading Mary
  • I started reading The Fragile Threads of Power, though have struggled to carve out enough time
  • I did not work on my reviews for the month
  • I did not work on my WIP outline
  • I did not make my phone call
  • Alex took care of taking the truck over to my coworker and his neighbor to get repair work done - huge relief!
  • I did get together with Taylor
  • I did wrap my Christmas gifts
  • I did finally get my cards into the mail
  • I was not able to attend my work webinar, because our power went out
  • I did attend our center meeting
  • I did not work on my reading page
  • I did figure out my list of what I'd need for baking, and more: actually got the stuff!

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 4/7 - I wound up with half days on both Wednesday and Friday due to power outages
  • Household Maintenance - 5/7
  • Physical Activity - 2/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 0/7
  • Wrote on 2nd+ Draft - 0/7
  • Meta Work - 4/7
  • Personal Writing - 3/7
  • Other Creative Things - 1/7
  • Reading - 7/7 - I finished reading Mary, and started The Fragile Threads of Power, plus read a bit of my ebook sideread; Taylor and I read What Moves the Dead, and started Silver and Lead; Alex and I read some of The Sun Dog
  • Attention to Media - 5/7 - Sunday I did have some reviews in the background while at work; Tuesday we had some news in the background and later watched a review; Wednesday was more reviews; Thursday we watched news coverage; Saturday watched some paranormal videos ad later a review.
  • Video Games - 2/7 - Taylor and I did a playthrough of Slay the Princess
  • Social Interaction - 5/7

Pretty quiet day

I got up and had breakfast and coffee, then called [personal profile] mashfanficchick. Ze texted RK, and he texted back that he was maybe going shopping tomorrow. So all plans are on hold until tomorrow morning.

So instead of going to the store for the rest of the day I did very little. The main thing was wrap the last three presents, the e-spinner for the Kid, the beer brewing thing for her boyfriend, and the ingrediants pack for the beer, which is coming from [personal profile] mashfanficchick. That was two rather big boxes and one slightly heavy one.

So I put Pandora on Christmas music, and set to it. Then I poured myself eggnog, and that's about it for any actual useful thing I did during the day.

I took a nap, and I played solitaire.

And of course I Teamed the FWiB. Our emailing was disturbed by my email to him from Earthlink bounces as undeliverable. I switched to my gmail account and that worked but it's annoying.

So anyway we'll see what happens tomorrow, either I go shopping with RK and [personal profile] mashfanficchick or I go to Shop Rite by myself. Or they go shopping without me and get the appetizers for Christmas. We shall see.

Sadly, no new Christmas cards today.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Gmail.

3. Final presents wrapped.

4. Eggnog

5. Naps.

6. Restful day.

I managed to get into bed by 11 last night, and my alarm went off at 7:20 and I hit snooze a couple of extra times, but I was up and ready to go by 8, which was the goal. It turned out that they only turned the water off in one set of apartments, so at least I didn't have to deal with that! (After the Big Leak of January 2023, I believe one of the "upgrades" was the ability to do this so they don't have to turn the water off for everyone every time, though I could have that wrong.)

Chocolate, mocha, and red velvet (mini) cupcakes are done! I got 80 of the chocolate and the red velvet using the smaller scoop, which is typical of my experience (though one of the chocolate ones got messed up when I put the pan in the oven, so I technically only have 79 cupcakes), and I got 92 of the mocha (usually also 80, though I guess I used the bigger scoop before?), but 2 exploded - a phenomenon I had not seen except on vanilla cupcakes before - so I have 90 usable ones of those. Then I stopped to have dinner and run the dishwasher and take the garbage out, and it was hard to get back in the kitchen then, but I did it. I made mocha Swiss meringue buttercream, and as frequently happens, it curdled when i added the flavoring, so I had to melt it, wait for it to cool down (about 12 minutes) and start whipping it again, which worked, thankfully. Then I made an outlandish amount of vanilla American buttercream for the funfetti cupcakes I will bake tomorrow, since that is what the boys prefer, but I find it grossly sweet.

I used up enough butter and eggs today that I had space for the containers of frosting, which is good. I still need to empty and reload the dishwasher, take a shower, and then run the dishwasher again so it's done for the next round. I mean, I have 4 bowls for my KitchenAid, and multiples of each type of attachment (e.g., beater, whisk, dough hook, etc.) but it's best to start the day with everything clean, just for my own peace of mind, though of course on Wednesday, the sink will be full of dirty things since I generally don't have time to empty and reload the dishwasher on Christmas Eve morning, what with all the piping and frosting and packing to go. We'll see what happens this year, since I don't have to leave as early as in past years, since we don't have an early reservation, but I still don't want to push it too late so I can avoid the worst of the traffic. We'll see how it goes.

Simply Wize are an Australian company who make a range of gluten-free products that are available in supermarkets and delis.

Their gluten-free puff pastry comes in a packet of four sheets and retail for AUD$11. These are about half the size of your standard frozen sheets of pastry.
Ingredients & Allergens
Starches (Potato, Tapioca, Corn), Water, Vegetable Oil (Soy), Egg, Stabilizers (415, 412), Anticaking Agent (460), Raising Agents (450, 500), Sugar, Salt, Soy Flour, Emulsifiers [322 (Soy), 471], Acidity Regulator (330). Contains Egg, Soy. May contain Milk, Sesame, Hazelnut.

I wanted to make a spinach pie (my recipe is loosely based on spanikopita) and so I rolled out two sheets so they were big enough to fit my rectangular baking tin (27.5cm x 17.5cm x 3.5cm). This made them quite thin and almost filo pastry-like. I did not blind bake, and made sure to drain the spinach really well so that the filling was not too moist. I brushed the top with a little melted butter and it cooked well, had a nice, golden colour and tasted like pastry should. It was not too flaky and the leftovers held together after being in the fridge and reheated.

Aside from the cost, the reduced size of the sheets made it a little awkward to use, but the taste and texture were good.

Mods, I note there is no "!: yeast-free" tag.

+ Had an extended family dinner today and got to listen to my lovely aunt and cousin talk about how great ChatGPT is, how she's using it to plan a girl's trip to Italy, and how helpful it'll be for writing the speeches at my grandmother's funeral. Fucking shoot me into outer space strapped to a rocket.

+ Got to see the latest Avatar movie at the cinemas. My least favorite of the three, lacking the genuine awe and beauty of the world. What they did try just felt forced, and one character in particular should have been left to die in the second movie ugh.

+ Big plus for the cozy and hazily lit curtain fic promo trailer thingy they did before the movie. IYKYK. Kinda made me wish I had an ear to the ground in that fandom still.

+ I think I've successfully broken through my iconning block!! Shout out to dysfunctional vampires and dysfunctional lesbians.

+ BIG psa: Apple shifted Pluribus to air on the 24th, two days earlier than usual. I'll have to get up extra early to see it before 2 Nøtter Til Askepott, because if not I'll be thinking about it and wanting to all day lol. It's been such a good series for me to watch? There's this whole thing where there's two wolves inside of me, one appreciating the thought and care put into every decision, and how slow it's allowed to move, the second wanting to pick into every detail and tear through it. Both enjoyable in different ways!

I have watched every episode a minimum of twice. It may be my new comfort watch show?¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

Blessed Yule and solstice, friends. May this next turn of the year be better to all of us than the one that's just ended.

Impressively and unexpectedly, we didn't lose power on the weekend (so many people did!); not really coincidentally, Bucky remains undecorated. We also haven't put up any lights or the wreath outside (probably just as well, given the winds), and I didn't even think of that until maybe yesterday. Oh, well.

(I no longer have any real hope of finishing a draft of this rewrite before Christmas, since I'm getting such a late start on work today and we have plans for much of Christmas Eve once [personal profile] scruloose's half-day of work ends. It's fine. I've been doing other things. *shrugs*)

A few nights ago I guess I ~slept wrong~, as I woke up Saturday with a very unhappy neck. Yesterday was better, and today is better again, and I'm lucky to not have this kind of thing happen more often (*knocks wood*), but it's so annoying as well as painful. Body, if you're taking damage while sleeping, why don't you move to a better position?! Does the conscious brain need to handle everything around here? (Thankfully no.)

1. Removing my data from various Meta sites-- most of them were there for business purposes, but I want to put my business energies elsewhere AND I don't want Meta to have my stuff floating around to use in their horrible AI nonsense. I'm downloading copies of my data and then deleting the posts (which they make you do one by one). I plan to put up a "where to find me" post for people who may come looking, and I'll keep the usernames for business purposes, but I'm going to focus on my (business) blog (and later newsletter/shop) and that's it.

2. Settling into using Obsidian for my personal data stuff. I think I've got a system set up that I like, and now I just need to add in things. For instance, I'm adding my books read for 2025 into the system and I've set up fun views like this:
A collection of book covers organized in rows

Which is built from a Base which is a table built from metadata in individual entries. So I'm adding books one by one, making sure the imported data is actually correct, and then copying over my notes/reviews. It's a little slow-going but it's fun to see everything in one place. And I've decided I don't care about counting how many pages I read in a year or even how many books I read in a month, just a general yearly total of books read is fine, so that'll make things easier going forward.

3. Listening to music from DEMO FEST 2025! Some recommendations: Error 804's ANGUISH, Morora's Kosovo, The Carringtons' Wild.

4. Downloading interesting pattern images from the Smithsonian digital collections to use for icons and (if I can figure out how) website backgrounds.

Orchestral mockup WIP featuring a "drunken" viola (Amati Viola). Because sometimes violas want to /burn longer/ have fun too. [1]

Trailure = "failure trailer." This is, fortunately, personal work at this point :) but my last composition summative assignment involved converging incrementally toward trailer format by getting all the errors out of the way one by one. I think the only thing I DIDN'T do was a cappella kazoo ensemble. :p

Meanwhile, back to Candle Arc 2D animation shenanigans: I have vocals recorded for one character, which means I can start nailing down timing on the animatic for lip sync. Still (joyfully) buried under composition/orchestration schoolwork! :3

It is now Will Stanton’s birthday, which means I had to save a Dark is Rising offering for it. Gonna be up front here – I love this story. I loved the experience of writing it (which started on a delayed train home, staring out the window), and my own connection to it. It is a long, rambling love-letter to my adopted home and perennial OTP.

There was actually meant to be at least one sequel, but I’ve still not finished it, so now I have the entire future of this version of these characters in my head. (Will ends up getting a job in Aberystwyth, so he can live with Bran – part of the difficulty there is the awkwardness about what RL people to include and how to get around that, but oh well. The next part was less complicated; it was Bran visiting Will in Oxford for Valentine’s day. There was rugby.) Anyway, enjoy.

In the Bleak Midwinter (TDIR, Bran/Will)

‘He set aside the pile of undergraduate essays he'd been marking, leaning against the window to stare out of it for a while, watching Wales unfold welcoming before him. At least, he mused, that was how it felt – like the prodigal son returning to his father's fold. It was different from going home, where he could feel the fields of Buckinghamshire folding around him whenever he went back to see his parents, but it was similar, too. I know you, the land seemed to say. I remember you. You belong here.’

A Dongzhi fic for solstice. WWX  takes LWJ along to his family celebrations, where LWJ and JYL bond over making him food. It's a bit soppy and very sweet, which is just what the longest night of the year needs.

Got up later than I wanted, at 10:40, and had breakfast and coffee, showered and dressed, and left to join [personal profile] mashfanficchick at Union Square in the Barnes and Noble.

The trip in went fine, and we met in the science fiction and fantasy section. I didn't buy anything though. We shopped all through the store, and ze got some things.

Then we went to the Union Square Holiday Market, and got lunch, lobster poutine. It was sooooo good!

We shopped through the market, again, I didn't get anything except something to drink.

Then we went to the Strand. Again, I didn't buy anything, but ze did.

Then we went to Forbidden Planet, and finally we got food for dinner at Whole Foods. While we were there, I called Middle Brother.

Then we went home, we took the 6 train together but I got out at Grand Central and transfered to the 7. Took that to Flushing and the 44 bus home.

All was well, and I fed the pets, and then Teamed the FWiB.

Just as we were saying goodbye, [personal profile] mashfanficchick called, which is good as I had been planning on calling zer to discuss the fact that I forgot the Kid expects us to get appetizers for Christmas. So we discussed getting stuff. An then ze lit the Hanukkah candles while I was on the line and that was very nice.

And today is the solstice, and the days will get longer again now, and this is a very good thing. The light returns.

And now it's time for bed.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. [personal profile] mashfanficchick

3. Nice day in the city.

4. Middle Brother doing well.

5. Plans for Christmas.

6. The solstice is here.

Stayed up too late last night and got a late start this morning, so I am already behind on my plan. But I will try to go to bed earlier tonight and get up earlier tomorrow to get back on track. Unfortunately, there is another planned water shut-off for plumbing repairs from 9 am - 12 pm, so I'll have to make sure to make the coffee required for both the chocolate and the mocha cupcakes ahead of time (it has to be room temp anyway), as well as making sure I have an extra bowl for handwashing.

I did get all the fig cookies made and packed into the cute cookie tins I bought so I'm not always giving away my ziploc containers (they are useful and they changed the shape so I can't get any more of the ones I really like), and the pork buns as well (pics) but I didn't eat dinner until after 7 pm and now the dishwasher is running, so I'm done for the night.

oh, I wanted to note that this year, I bought some fancy holiday/red-and-green sprinkles from KAB for the cookies - normally I just use multicolor nonpareils, but these look kind of festive, I thought. I also got red/green sprinkles for the funfetti cupcakes so I will be very on-theme.
