I did not go downtown today because of the expected (and received) ice. I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered.

I read fanfic and watched Secrets of the Zoo (like, actually watched, it wasn’t just background tv). I also re-watched the first two eps of Mistletoe Murders to gather some information for a fic I’m planning to write (for [community profile] smallfandomfest; if you guessed that it’s a crossover with Murder, She Wrote, you’d be right *g*).

Today I tried the Ginger Peach tea. At first I didn’t like it, perhaps the ginger, or the combination, but it actually grew on me.

Temps started out at 32.4(F) and reached 46.8. We got a lot of ice, as you can see from the pics, and wind later in the day. The warm temps melted the ice off the trees before the wind hit, thankfully. But Pip discovered that we have a lot of branches down on top of the hill (aka, above the pine trees).

Mom Update:

Again, mom sounded good when I talked to her on the phone. She’s been eating and keeping it down. Sister A was there when I called. Also, Sister S showed up yesterday and she and Sister A got out one of the puzzles I gave mom for Christmas. I hope it encourages mom to do some of it. At least she still has visitors, but I feel bad I can’t be one of them right now.

My fic year in review: Biosphere, Doctor Who, ER, Fire Country, Interview with the Vampire, The Newsreader, A Nice Indian Boy, The Old Guard, The Pitt, Stargate Atlantis, Superman )

Added up, that gives me:

Word Count: 163,779
Fandoms: 11
Stories: 56

This is one of my all-time most prolific writing years, both in terms of total word count and in the fact that I averaged just over a fic a week. I guess vampires + doctors = inspiration. Who knew?

So everyone in fandom has become obsessed with the gay hockey show, and [personal profile] lysimache and I watched it a couple days ago. Neither of us care about hockey (I think we are both hoping that fandom decides to care about baseball, though this seems unlikely -- but, hey, it's 42 days until pitchers and catchers report) but we do like gay things a lot.

It was nice? I mean, it's not going to be my new fandom, but I'm not sorry I watched it. I did nearly give up after the first two episodes for narrative reasons that I will explain below.

Spoilers )

It's only six episodes, so... you might as well watch it if you like gay shows, I guess? It's not bad.

I somehow own the first book. I am not sure yet if I will read it.

Episode 6:
Morikawa takes Aichi along to another card shop called PSY that only shows itself for certain people and encourages him to join a tournament. A girl gets in his face and stares at him. 😅

Then a really tall woman with a funky hairdo challenges him to a duel. ...I kinda want to try that hairstyle just for fun.

A card shop run by all-women is cool. And while Aichi lost, he got a new card and learned a lot!

Episode 7: Morikawa vs Kamui, the latter of course won. Aichi gets pressured to follow Kai by Kamui along with Miwa who want to see where he lives. He catches them and is naturally unhappy, Aichi took the wrap and asked Kai to tell him his situation if he wins, but Kai says he isn't ready and to stay out of his business. "If I want you to know then I'll tell you."

Kai vs Kamui, Kai wins though Kamui lasted a while. Before Kai leaves, Aichi promises to faces him someday.

Episode 8: Did Emi have to be so mean? I mean maybe she didn't want him to get hurt? But it's good for beginners to participate and get experience!

Aichi tries to sign up last minute but a guy Kishida throws in his application too and there was only one spot left. Kishida is voiced by Konishi Katsuyuki. Ironic to hear him call out "Alfred?!

Aichi did so good!! He's just going to continue getting better even if he can't beat Kai yet.

Episode 9: Oh, Misaki's in the tournament!

Poor Aichi is so nervous and beating himself up for it, but it's just because he cares so much.

Morikawa may not be bullying Aichi anymore but he's still hopeless. He'll only improve if he starts taking the actual game seriously and not just what he wants out of it. And he gets a big thumbs down for looking down on Misaki!

Misaki and Aichi won, hah. =P

Looking forward to closing out this terrible year. It was not all bad. There were beautiful moments, but it was overshadowed by the grief of losing Luke to cancer. And now I seem to be staring down burnout, which is devastating since it's affecting something I love, but it means an opportunity to do something new.

Have not posted much this year but managed to finish three Nu:Carnival fics: one is for the winner of my 2025 giveaway, one is for an exchange, and the third is my fourth annual holiday fic.

I talk about the trio a little more in this post.

I did a load of laundry (bed sheets, so also stripped and re-made the bed), hand-washed dishes, vacuumed the bedroom rug (I used to think the old vacuum did okay on the bedroom rug, but it was even doing poorly there because the new vacuum just glides over it and I don’t have to go over a spot more than once to suck up the dog hair; such a treat!), cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and changed kitty litter (thankfully I’m done with the crap litter and back to the usual). I turned the last little bit of chuck roast into soup.

I finished Boyfriend Material and read some fanfic. I watched the Bills game. NGL, getting that two-point conversion would’ve been exciting as heck, but I wish they’d gone for the safe (safer) play. It’s no fun watching your team lose. *pouts*

Today I tried the Cinnamon Plum tea. It was pretty good, and not too cinnamon-y. But I also didn’t let it steep as long (as I did with the Cinnamon Orange) for the first cup, which might have helped.

Bad news: I felt myself starting to get stuffy today. I hope that whatever I catch from Pip is mild.

Temps started out at 1.8(F) (BRR!) and reached 32 (according to Pip; I missed it). There was actually a little bit of sun in the morning, but it didn’t last, sadly. Freezing rain started during the evening and we're supposed to get more overnight. (Spoiler alert: we did get more overnight. o_O)

Mom Update:

Mom sounded good when I spoke to her. I can’t wait until I can see her again. I want to see for myself that she’s looking as good as she’s sounding. My brother visited her in the morning and Sister A in the afternoon, so she did have some company, which is good.

I'm home for Christmas and the New Year, hurrah. I've drunk a lot of tea, there have been mince pies, I've spent nice time with the nieces. I also had the peak "Irish village at the holidays" experience of having to make small talk for a few minutes with a man whose wife is—known to even far-flung diaspora members like myself, but unknown to him—having an open affair with the parish priest. This is the kind of wholesome experience that you just don't get in other places.

Happy cooking things:

Bread pudding in a pumpkin: will do again.

Seared baby bok choi with potatoes and pre-cooked tofu made a nice lunch. (I've learned that pressing and then air frying slabs of tofu really creates a nice chewy texture).

Used hatch chili skins that i'd shoved in the freezer, ground up two very old dried-out okra, and coriander stems and seeds to make a broth. That plus left-over black beans from the freezer and some left over tomato paste made a very satisfying soup. House smelled lovely.

Realized we still had frozen Wellington from Thanksgiving, so not making that today. Caramelized onions and made quasi-duxelles from the fresh mushrooms and shoved in freezer for some other time.

Shallots and beet greens, first cooking the stems and shallots down, then adding the greens. Served over toast that i used to wipe up the caramelized onion pan with slivers of a nice sharp cheese (Sartori Merlot BellaVitano). Bliss.

Happy that that is net-less stuff in freezer, plus got fresh green things eaten or fixed before they went too sad.

I need to eat down the freezer so that when Christine has surgery on Jan 13, we can have comfort food for her in the fridge.

I carefully watched for a low stress time to give Christine more stress: i shared with her some observations about the things listed for her surgery appointment that point to some recovery aspects i knew she would find.... hard. She's coping OK. I am pretty sure the surgeon's description of recovered state was interpreted by Christine to apply to immediately post surgery, so it was a surprise. What is stressing me is the need to go to Ohio and the uncertainty about the recovery needs. I have a hard time believing that we could be scheduling the week of MLK day.

Today both Marlowe and Bruno did inappropriate urination. That stressed Christine lots. I got a laundry line set up in the back porch, under the ceiling fan, so hopefully this will ease some of the appliance demands.

Current things going on today:

- me stress buying cat grass and different foods for the cats because they have been off in since XMas eve

- cat eating normally again (making earlier stress feel irrelevant)

- having too many things I want to do

- just "I GUESS" in general

- envying people's excitement about Heated Rivalry (I don't feel motivated to watch lol)

- envying people's excitement about Stranger Things (but absolutely not watching, got bored after season 2 and one of the leads is a Zionist soooo)

- Cut out celebrity drama podcasts except for celebrity blinds channel because I was getting too invested in something that has no meaning or adds nothing to my life

- still hating on the new dog because I had to put up gates to stop her from bugging my cats and their food

- And so many other things lol

And also trying to remember to stop people pleasing. I re-read my post just now and thought "oooh maybe the comment about the lead is too much" and stopped myself. This is my journal, my opinion. I'm not going to be right, I'm not going to be wrong, I just am. I'll take responses and consider them. But why do I keep people pleasing? (It's probably why I don't have many friend-friends. IRL. And so on. I'm so worried about offending them that I remove myself lol sigh)

A Rainbow-Coloured Dream (Fina event):

It's always weird in these games when the MC starts talking for themselves with a personality you wouldn't necessarily choose when you're in control. Vita ribbing on Outsider so much is pretty funny though. X'D

Can't believe Vita took Fina outside without telling Outsider?? And she was 20 levels lower than the mobs, and Vita wasn't much help only using his sword.

I've always liked powers that can create from imagination, like Ronan's from The Raven Boys.

What were they doing with the kidnapped kids??

We didn't get all the details about what happened with the Glennvilles, I wonder if we'll get it with an Outsider quest?

Meeting Zhiliu:

*smh* That ticket seller in the theatre digging himself into a deeper and deeper hole. Hope he gets fired. "Thoughtless lips invite trouble." you mean loose lips ink ships? X'D

Lol why is Snow standing off to the side in the viewing box, there's plenty of room on the seat. How come it played Phantasio's singing when it was Violetta singing? They could've just played the melody without the voice.

Zhiliu's phoxichor sensor reacted to Vita? 🤔

I don't care one way or another for her design.

I did not go downtown today. Instead I was out shoveling the sidewalk by about 7am. (At least the snow was over so I only had to go out and shovel once.) Pip, sick as he is, was blowing snow (the driveway and walking trails). And then he went up to the garage to plow that out.

I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, ran a load in the dishwasher, swept and mopped the dining room and hallway, went for a walk with the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, and showered. We had more of the chicken noodle soup for supper.

I read fanfic and watched some HGTV programs. Dr. Pol was my evening background tv. Today I tried the pomegranate tea. It was good, though I was familiar with the flavor because I've had pomegranate tea before when I went to the local coffee shop (that is no longer there). It came in a tin, I think Harney & Sons, or something like that? I looked it up, their Pomegranate Oolong.

Pip had cold sweats this morning and wasn’t able to keep his breakfast down, but he seemed to do better as the day progressed.

Temps started out at 17.4(F) (a whopping 10 degrees warmer than yesterday morning!). According to the ruler I stuck in the snow in different areas, we got about 8" of snow overnight. Thankfully it was not wet and heavy, but even light snow is a pain when you’ve got go shovel 8" of it! Temps reached 25.3.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded pretty good when I talked to her. She’s actually eating more! More being relative. She had some protein drink for breakfast, and some mashed potatoes and peas for lunch. Eating anything solid like that has been a real trial. She was thinking about what to have for supper when I called. One of her friends visited and Sister A called her so she did have some social time.

Dangerous Animals ('25): It might seem heavy-handed to some, like the part where she makes a joke that the worst spot on a dick is the man(?), and the part where the shark didn't attack her for some reason but then attacked the bad guy, but IDC, she and her boyfriend survived and that's more than most shark movies. If you didn't guess, the dangerous animals in question turned out to be men, not sharks. I'm not going to rate it because I skimmed some parts (like the part where she did things to her thumb to escape the cuff, ick). Honestly I'm not sure I was in the mood to watch this and that's why I skipped through.

Thirteen Lives ('22): The movie adaptation for the Thai cave rescue. I don't remember feeling so uncomfortable for the water scenes in the mini-series, I actually had to skip through most of them because they were too claustrophobic. It showed the Seal's death in explicit detail, too. The mini-series definitely fleshes out the characters more, especially the Thai ones but this adaptation had a lot of tension and fleshing out of the non-Thai characters. The boys are barely shown in the movie adaptation whereas we follow them a lot in the mini-series. I just found that while this was in production, another movie adaptation of the rescue came out and now I'm curious (it's higher rated, too). That's three adaptations! 2/5

A Perfect Getaway ('09): Multiple red herrings and a mid-movie twist. I skimmed because I'm so frickin' tired I can't handle too much tension, so I'll keep it on my PTW.

booksmart ('19): Some scenes really made me laugh, some made me WTF and others made me think. I'm glad I watched it! 4/5 stars

Lady Bird
('17): So this came out 2 years before booksmart, I didn't realize Beanie Feldstein was a main character in them both. I ended up having to DNF a third of the way through, I just wasn't connecting enough. I do relate to the resentment and even self-harm that resulted from it that Lady Bird was feeling towards her mom.

I hit Walmart while I was downtown and the bank-drive thru on the way home.

I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, emptied the dishwasher, used the leftover chicken to make chicken noodle soup, went for a walk with the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, paid a bill online, and scooped kitty litter. There were some phone calls I should have made (that will now have to wait until Monday), but I forgot it was a Friday (presuming they were open). Pip being home throws me off.

I read some fanfic and more in Boyfriend Material. I watched some HGTV programs.

Pip felt crappier today. He took cold meds before bed last night and went to bed early. Today I picked up some cold & flu for him. He slept (or tried to, there was a lot of distraction) most of the morning, felt a bit better in the afternoon, and was in bed by 6pm.

Temps started out at 7.5(F) and reached 19.1. TWC app is calling for 1-3 inches of snow this evening (it’s supposed to start at 5pm) and 5-8 overnight. DNW!!

Mom Update:

Mom sounded good when I talked to her on the phone. I had planned to visit, but given that Pip was sicker today, I decided it would be better if I didn’t. Even with a mask. Her BFF had just left when I called, so she did have a visitor today. I probably won’t visit her again until I can be sure that Pip is getting better and I didn’t catch anything from him. I hate letting too many days build up between visits because I know she likes the company and I like to see for myself how she’s doing.
