Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh

This was so GOOD. I loved watching Kyr change and develop over the course of this story. She's really not a great person at the beginning but she really grows as a person and it was such a satisfying end.

Despite Sunday being hot, everything went well. It was so fun to see everyone at the local anime convention who dressed up in cosplay. There were 2 Vash (stampede variety), an Envy, Reki and Langa, as well as Shredder and April O'Neil from TMNT (not sure from which series - maybe OG animation?). Anyway, lots of cosplayers, which was cool. I didn't get a chance to walk artist alley but we got set up done and performed for the closing ceremonies. The crowd was so energetic!

I have been the creative director for this drum group since October 2016. It's only been the last year or so that I finally feel comfortable in my role and confidence in it as well. I feel that reflects on the group as well.

Slowly getting through my current project of adding my 'mark for later' to my Notion list. I am hoping AO3 has corrected today's issue by the time I get home so I can continue. Once that's done, my next goal is to go through the files I have saved (fics and then ebooks) and get things organized in Calibre. It's a full on hobby saving fanfiction LOL

This week is fairly mild. There's drum practice Tuesday and Thursday and then Saturday is the street fair we open for. It will be a hot one but at least we are early in the afternoon, at 11:30am. After that I have two practices with some bon odori dancers for the local Buddhist church's Obon festival on August 6th. But other than that, the street fair should be the last full taiko performance until September.

So there will be another lull so maybe we might get some new members and I can get them trained by the next festival. We shall see.

Woke up with my brain hurting this morning, so that bodes well. Parents are going to a friend's house for their anniversary and I was apparently not invited. I might still have said no, because of the headache and, you know, introverted, but I still like to be invited.

Tomorrow my drum group has a gig playing for the local anime convention. It's all part of being a taiko player.

Today is my grandmother's birthday but I'm not sure how to get a hold of her. She's currently in a rehab center, trying to get back to some sort of wellness because she had a bad bladder infection, combined with low vitamin B and other things that really affected her mind. I know my aunt has been taking care of things as well as her close neighbor and I am grateful for that.

I just remembered I need to take my car in to have the rear passenger tire checked as it has a slow leak.

Currently reading Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh and still in the first 30% (ebook). Definitely rooting for Kyr to get her head out of her ass and seeing it start is such a relief. We'll see where it goes. 2023 has really been my return to book reading and I am glad. But also a little sad, as I haven't been able to read fanfiction that much since I've been using library ebooks. It's okay though as I'm still hoarding all the fanfics XD

Happy Saturday I guess lol

This is my second time reading it and I enjoyed it as much as the first time. I admit to loving the movie more than the book but I appreciate the additional background info!

The next two movies on my rewatch were Cloverfield and Dante's Peak.

Cloverfield falls under what I call the monster disaster/apocalypse. When it first initially was teased and released in 2008, I was excited because I like monster movies like this, such as Godzilla and Alien and so on. I am highly picky about my monster movies and this one fit what I liked. I even changed one of my user names to "case_designate_cloverfield" and thought I was so cool lol.

This movie is one of the films that I watch with regularity, although not as much as some of the others I like. It was also one of those films done in the hand cam style. I remember one of the complaints was that it was so shakey when people watched it in the theater that it gave them motion sickness. I found it a unique perspective and enjoyed it. It's interesting that the next films in the Cloverfield universe avoided that (or so I remember lol).

Tonight I rewatched Dante's Peak, with Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton. Another in a long line of disaster films that I like to rewatch. It's one of those movies inspired by the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption and placed in idaho. Filmed in Wallace, Idaho and set in the fictional town of Dante's Peak, Washington, it's always fun to drive by Wallace and look at where the fictional stratovolcano was. I've always been hyperfixated on Mt. St. Helens because she erupted the year I was born, when I was just over 2 months old.

With what I know about volcanoes, because of that fascination, it's interesting to to watch all the main 4 characters and what they go through to survive and know that some of these were DEFINITELY fictional and not possible. But it is a movie and meant to be entertaining.

It's funny to me how many of my favorite movies are disasters of some sort. Weather, alien, etc. And I enjoy it a lot. Here's to continuing to rewatch my favorites and maybe finding some new ones.

The last few months has me remembering dreams that have 9 times out of 10 featured in some way my old major high school crush. He's shown up in quite a few over the course of the last couple of years and I thought I was over him (again). THEN tiktok's algorithm brought up a few of those non-tagged videos where someone reads tarot for you and saying that someone is preparing to enter into my life and my brain goes to him. I doubt I'll ever see him again in this life but I don't know why he's persisted. Or at least the idea of him has persisted. Maybe it was the brief reconnection in the mid-2010s, pre-friend break up of hell that fucked me up, but I know that I was probably not what he wanted despite him spilling the details of what he was looking for during the lunch we had.

Anyway, he's been on my mind as a result and those damn tiktoks lol.

I guess the main reason why he sticks with me is because he is an idea. The closest I possibly got to getting a partner, which doesn't mean anything because I haven't actually ever dated anyone. Plus there is absolutely no one in my life right now that am interested in and haven't for many many years. In addition to my personal understanding of my own identity that has changed since then. I'd love to see him again. Even just to hang out. We were friends in high school, post my confession to him (he was waiting for college lol). Went to a couple movies, he helped me and my family move.

Lots of memories.

I'm not even sure I want to be with anyone anymore but I would still consider him. Even if we were just platonic partners lol

I need to get over him. I'm not even sure I'm still on him, other than he persists in my goddamn dreams LOL

I saw a clip on Tiktok of a part of this movie and it was that moment that pulled me into watching this movie today and I am SO GLAD I DID.

It was funny and charming and made me laugh out at certain things as well as cry at others and it ended perfectly. I went searching for the book afterwards and discovered that there were some changes between the book/graphic novel vs the movie. According to reviews they were good changes but enough to make me wonder if I should buy the graphic novel or not. I am going to put it on my list and think about it.

And by list, I mean my holds on Libby. I have learned to embrace it thanks to my friend on tumblr.

I had the desire to watch one of my favorite genres of film, which is disaster films and end of the world/apocalyptic films so I did a search for those top however many disaster or end of the world or something and made a list of those I wanted to see or curious about.

I figure I'll add on to this post as I watch. Maybe I'll keep doing it or maybe I'll not. Who knows. So far I have 55 in my list. Some are my favorites and some unknown to me.

Follow along if you wish. First eight were on tumblr and moving forward, the rest will be cross-posted [Original post on tumblr].
